That translates to over thirty-thousand new jobs across the country over the next ten years. What Do Medical Billing and Coding Specialists Do?
Kentucky billing and coding specialists are the people behind the scenes that keep the health care industry running. A billing specialist can expect to work with patient financial records, insurance providers and even Medicare. A billing specialist verifies payments, resolves billing issues, and works with insurance providers to keep accurate and timely records. A coding specialist records every treatment, condition or diagnosis, according to an established set of industry codes, into patient records. These codes are extensive, over ten thousand in all, and must be accurate for the sake of the patients, as well as the health care providers.
What Education Requirements Do Billing and Coding Specialists Need?
The level of education that you will need will depend on where in the country you are located, the type of service you are performing, and the company you work for. Billing personnel will need strong organizational skills, accounting skills, knowledge of insurance procedures and laws, and clinical terminology. Coders will need a solid knowledge of the accepted coding systems, anatomy, physiology and clinical terminology. These skills can come from a degree, certification, or even a diploma course. One of the best certifications to have is the Registered Health Information Technician, or RHIT. Coders may also want to look into the Certified Professional Coder certification, or similar certification.
