He must be able to learn new computer software programs, because computers are updated often.
Coders use different computer programs and work on a computer all day long. They must be detail oriented. They must also read paper charts concerning patients and enter the records into a computer. Some coders work on ER cases, others impatient cases, still others outpatient surgery. They must also be cross trained so they can work with any type of records. Sometimes when they have questions, they must ask a physician a question to help determine the proper way to do something. Sometimes the physicians will document enough information the questions will not need to be asked.
