  • Quality evaluation, comprising peer assessment scores from heads of internal medicine, directors of admissions, and directors of residency programs at medical and osteopathic schools, as well as deans of academic affairs. The ranking of a school is 30 percent based on this indicator.
  • Research activity, including total federal research grant awards in dollars and federal grant awards in dollars per full-time faculty member. To give the schools’ overall research more weight and faculty research per member less, U.S. News reweighted two factors. For the institutions taken into account by the research medical school ranking model, this factor accounts for 40% of the overall rank.
  • Student selection includes admittance percentage, average undergraduate GPA, and MCAT scores. 20% of the overall rank for the research medical school ranking model is made up of this indicator.
