Medical coding involves translating the treatments, conditions, and diagnoses into the accepted codes used by the health care industry. Each time a service or treatment is performed, the billing and coding departments will need to update the files accordingly.
What Type of Education Is Required for Medical Billing and Coding?
There are a wide range of options for medical billing and coding specialists in Massachusetts; degrees, certificates, and diploma courses are all available. What type of background you will need depends largely upon what particular field you choose, but in general, the more credentials you have, the more options you will have. While not required, the Registered Health Information Technician is a good credential to have. This certification is usually offered at the end of a two year degree course, and is administered by the AHIMA. Some other certifications are the CCS, CPA, and the CPC for medical coding.
