He must request payments from insurance companies or patients. He may work in a doctor’s office, hospital, mental or physical rehabilitation facility, another medical facility, or even at home.
A medical billing and coding specialist must have at least a high school diploma, although most coders have an Associate Degree. He must have computer skills and must be able to quickly learn new computer software programs, as computers are frequently updated. He will have to learn medical terminology, medical coding, information about medical records laws, including privacy laws. It helps to know bookkeeping, be good at math, and be detail oriented.
