A medical billing and coding specialist works in an exciting place–a doctor’s office. Those who are well trained can expect to get a good job and participate in helping to insure that the office runs in an orderly and efficient manner. There is always a great need for billing and coding specialists in Arkansas and throughout the United States.
Often medical billing and coding specialists have Associate Degrees, although some schools offer a diploma instead.
Medical billing and coding specialists use lab symptoms, procedures, and signs to find the patient’s most important diagnostic. A trained professional has many guidelines, international guidelines, to use to pick the correct diagnostic and code it into records. He also is responsible for bills for patients, their insurance providers, or both, if both are responsible for the bills.
A medical billing and coding specialist must have computer skills. A knowledge of bookkeeping is helpful. He must learn medical terminology, coding, medical transcription, physiology, health information laws, and privacy laws. He must be able to learn new computer software programs, because computers are updated often.
Coders use different computer programs and work on a computer all day long. They must be detail oriented. They must also read paper charts concerning patients and enter the records into a computer. Some coders work on ER cases, others impatient cases, still others outpatient surgery. They must also be cross trained so they can work with any type of records. Sometimes when they have questions, they must ask a physician a question to help determine the proper way to do something. Sometimes the physicians will document enough information the questions will not need to be asked.
Medical Billing and Coding Specialist Salary Outlook in Arkansas
Most professionals earn $13 to $15 an hour in Arkansas, which would be about $32,200 a year for a 40 hour week. Sometimes those with an Associate Degree in business might earn over $15 an hour. (Figures courtesy of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Employment & Wages database.)
If you need financial aid, you should first fill out FAFSA for the government. You will then be able to learn what kinds of aid will be eligible for when you go to college. After you complete the FAFSA, ask your financial aid officer questions. You will find the process to be simple if you stay informed.
